Well look at it this way. He's 90 years old, and undestandably apprehensive about going up in a relatively new type of space capsule. So he's already on edge and thinking about his mortality.

Then he's shot up into the sky and experiences a rush I can only visualize, suddenly seeing the blue skies of Earth abruptly vanish to be replaced by nothing but the inky void.

For a moment he feels isolated, cut off, completely lost in an alien enviornment. Then he looks down, and sees the small, fragile Earth hanging against the backdrop of infinite night.
